Colonial Williamsburg Resorts
Williamsburg Inn & The Griffin Hotel
Williamsburg, Virginia
Since opening in 1937, the Inn has reflected the vision of benefactor John D. Rockefeller Jr. to provide the experience of staying at a comfortable Virginia estate with the most modern and gracious appointments. Regarded among the world's greatest inns, the Inn is the crown jewel of the Colonial Williamsburg hotels, offering luxurious accommodations adjacent to the country's most celebrated living history museum. For many, the Inn is a destination in itself. Its whitewashed brick exterior, pediments, arches, and columns highlight its neoclassical design, while the interiors create the ambience of a comfortable Southern estate. Gourmet dining, a spring‐fed pool, clay tennis courts, an award‐winning golf course, and a fitness club complete with spa services offer a memorable resort experience.
In 2001 the Williamsburg Inn surpassed even Rockefeller's aspirations when it underwent an extensive restoration, encompassing every aspect of its interior. 1717 was selected to update the Inn's logo by incorporating the best of their original 1937 logo and the circa 1960 logo they were still using at the time. Upon completion of the logo redesign, 1717 was commissioned to create a new ADA‐compliant interior wayfinding signage system for the landmark five‐star inn.
In 2017, Colonial Williamsburg Resorts renovated and rebranded the two freestanding modernist wings of the 1957 Williamsburg Inn. The 43-room, 3-star hotel formerly known as Providence Hall was renamed The Griffin Hotel. The two wings formerly named the Director’s and Executive Wings are now called the Green Wing and the Gold Wing. 1717 was commissioned to design the logo and create new vehicular wayfinding and architectural signage.
